The Openreach Copper Switch-Off: Is Your Business Ready?

The way businesses communicate and connect to the internet is changing. Openreach has announced the full switch-off of the UK’s copper-based phone and broadband services, meaning businesses that haven’t yet upgraded need to take action – or risk being left disconnected.

What’s Happening?

By January 2027, Openreach will retire the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). That means traditional phone lines and broadband services that rely on copper wiring, such as ADSL and FTTC (Superfast Fibre), will no longer work.

Instead, all businesses must switch to fully digital solutions such as:

• VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) / SIP for phone calls
• Full Fibre (FTTP) or SoGEA for internet connectivity

Why Is This Change Happening?

Copper-based infrastructure has been in use for decades, but it’s now outdated and unable to support the speed and reliability businesses need. Full-fibre networks provide faster, more stable, and future-proofed connectivity that meets the demands of modern businesses.

The switch-off is a step towards an all-digital, cloud-based future, ensuring businesses can work efficiently, securely, and without disruption.
