“Turn It Off and On Again” – Why It Works

How many times have you heard “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” with a hint of humour directed at the IT industry? This simple advice is actually surprisingly effective. For small business owners, understanding why this works can save them time, reduce frustration, and even prevent additional IT support calls.

“Turn It Off and On Again” – Why It Works

Why Systems Sometimes Go Wrong & Why Restarting Fixes Issues

Modern laptops, servers, and network devices are incredibly complex. Over time, small issues can accumulate, slowing devices or causing unexpected behaviour. Glitches, if you like.

Common causes can include:

Memory leaks: Some programs slowly consume available memory and never release it

Stuck processes: Applications that freeze or fail to respond

Pending updates: Software updates that require a restart to fully apply

Connectivity issues: Wi-Fi, printers, or VPN connections that hang

Simple glitches can easily be fixed by turning a device off and on again. It shuts down stuck programs and clears memory, recaptures your attention to install updates (which can patch occasional problems). It can fix network issues and reconnect to services, helping laptops and servers run efficiently. In short, a reboot can often get things working again.

If you aren’t in the habit of fully shutting down your computers before you leave for the day, it’s time to start rethinking that. Ensuring everything gets switched off helps you get started quicker the next morning by avoiding common glitches that accumulate over time.

But a shutdown might not actually be a shut down, fast boot instead of shutting everything down does half of that and then puts the computer into a deep sleep. The idea is it is then faster to start up the next time you use it. On computers we manage we disable this feature so we get the full benefits of a full shutdown. The restart option will always do a full shutdown.

When a Restart Isn’t Enough

Not all issues are solved by a reboot. Be cautious if you notice frequent crashes even after restarting, repeated data loss or corruption, persistent error messages and security alerts or unusual behaviour. The problem, in these cases, may be something more sinister. In this instance, call your IT support team to look into it.

Good Habits for Small Businesses

To keep devices running smoothly:

  1. Shut down and restart devices regularly: Every day is a great habit to stick to
  2. Apply updates promptly: Security and software patches protect your business, so they are worth applying as soon as possible
  3. Schedule IT maintenance: Let professionals handle deeper issues as they arise
  4. Train staff: Make restarts part of your standard troubleshooting

So, Should You “Turn It Off and On Again”?

While it’s a classic IT joke, turning it off and on again actually works in most cases. So yes, it is worth giving it a go if you get stuck. Plus, it’s an easy, low-cost first step that often solves common technical issues quickly. But remember, for persistent or serious issues, contact your IT professionals to prevent downtime or data loss.
