Windows 365 is Microsoft’s cloud-based operating system.
Instead of running Windows operating software directly on your device, your full Windows experience, including apps, settings, and files, lives in the cloud. You can access your files and data using any device with an internet connection and access to your Windows 365 plan.
Windows 365 was officially announced by Microsoft on July 14, 2021, at the Microsoft Inspire conference. The service became generally available to businesses and organisations on August 2, 2021. The launch represented a major step in Microsoft’s vision for hybrid work, delivering a scalable, secure, and accessible Windows experience for businesses of all sizes. Since its launch, Windows 365 has continued to evolve, adding new features and expanding availability to enable remote, flexible work environments.
Windows 365 is not a new version of Windows; it's just a new way to access Microsoft apps like Word, Excel, and Teams. Instead of being tied to a single physical machine, you can access them from different devices in any location because they're hosted on Microsoft’s servers, not yours.
Microsoft has designed Windows 365 to host Windows apps, from Microsoft Office to specialised business tools like Microsoft Project and Microsoft Bookings. The good news is that your favourite Windows applications will work just as they do on a traditional PC. In fact, better, because you’ll always be on the updated version.
It also integrates with a number of third-party SaaS products, like Salesforce, giving you plenty of opportunity to streamline how you work and where you work.
Your files also move with you (once you have uploaded or created them). So whether you’re editing a Word document on your office desktop or your home tablet, everything looks and works the same. This also makes collaboration much easier, provided you have given file access to your teammates.
Microsoft built strong security features into Windows 365, including data encryption, protected access controls, and continuous monitoring. Your data is stored in Microsoft's data centres, not on your local device, which can actually reduce risks if your laptop is lost or stolen.
IT admins have more control over who can access the Cloud PC, too, and security updates are managed centrally. In addition, businesses can customise security and compliance policies to meet their specific needs, setting their own security settings, such as multi-step authentication and conditional access policies, to help meet regulatory requirements and internal standards as teams work.
Remote Desktop has existed for years, so what makes Windows 365 unique? Both let you access a PC remotely, but Windows 365 is much easier to set up and manage. There’s no VPN or concern over your physical machine’s status. Your Cloud PC is always on, up to date, and accessible from anywhere.
Windows 365’s chief advantage is the access you have from any device in any location. It suits your remote team, freelancers, or anyone who needs to switch between locations and devices quickly. It also suits your budget, because you no longer need to ship hardware.
You’ll find W365 consistent too, updating files in real time, and allowing teams to collaborate seamlessly, cutting down on wasted time, reducing work frustrations, and keeping your team productive.
