Working abroad, what are the risks?

Working abroad has never been easier. With cloud platforms, video calls, and remote access tools, business owners and teams can stay productive from almost anywhere. But while the freedom is appealing, working outside the UK can introduce a range of hidden IT and cybersecurity risks that many businesses overlook.

One of the biggest risks is unsecured internet connections. Public Wi-Fi in hotels, cafés, and airports is often poorly protected, making it easier for cybercriminals to intercept data. Logging into emails, financial platforms, or client systems on these networks can expose sensitive information without you even realising.

Another concern is data protection and compliance. Different countries have different data laws and accessing or storing business data abroad could potentially create compliance issues, especially for sectors like finance or accountancy. Even something as simple as accessing client records overseas could introduce risk if it isn’t properly managed.

Device security is also a key factor. When travelling, laptops, phones, and tablets are more likely to be lost, stolen, or accessed by others. Without the right safeguards in place, a single lost device could lead to a major data breach.

There’s also the issue of access control and visibility. When teams are spread across locations, it becomes harder to monitor who is accessing systems, from where, and on what device. This lack of visibility can make it easier for suspicious activity to go unnoticed.

This is where Westway IT can help.

We support businesses with secure, flexible remote working solutions that allow teams to work confidently from anywhere. This includes setting up secure VPN access to protect connections on public networks, implementing multi-factor authentication to ensure only authorised users can log in, and applying device security measures.

We also provide proactive monitoring and support, meaning any unusual activity can be identified and dealt with quickly, wherever your team is working.

Most importantly, Westway IT takes a plain-English, practical approach, helping business owners understand the risks without technical jargon, and putting straightforward protections in place.

Working abroad doesn’t have to mean increased risk, but it does require the right setup. With the right support, your team can stay productive, secure, and connected, wherever work takes them.
